Allegheny County is renowned for our network of municipalities — cities, townships, boroughs — that offer stable, attractive residential neighborhoods side-by-side with bustling business districts. Together, these unique neighborhoods and convenient shopping venues attract residents to the County — and help retain residents already here.
A key ACED objective is to help our 130 municipalities maintain their infrastructure and other assets that make them so appealing. This mission is coordinated by our Municipal Development Division, which assists in a variety of important ways, including:
- Sewer and Water Program. Which offers financing and technical advice for sustaining and improving drinking water resources, sewage treatment and collection systems, and storm water collection systems.
- Upgrades to Recreational Facilities. When community playgrounds need new equipment, when popular ball fields require a new backstop or playing surface, when a potential recreational site must be graded, the Division is there to help.
- Safe Neighborhood Demolition Program. Vacant and dilapidated structures create visual eyesores and health hazards. In many cases, municipalities can turn to the Division to provide funding for the razing of these unsafe buildings.
- General Public Improvements. The Division offers financing for such activities as road reconstruction, bridge repair, curbs and sidewalks, catchbasin repair, retaining walls and Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance projects.
The Division even may underwrite tap-in fees — and the purchase of water meters, gas monitors and smoke alarms — for County residents who lack the resources to pay for these vital necessities.
The bottom line on the Division’s activities: All are designed to improve the quality of life for Allegheny County residents.
